This study examined the role of illustrations in NCERT English textbooks to evaluate their effectiveness in supporting learning and comprehension. Using Levin's illustration typology, textbook images were analyzed to determine their pedagogical functions, while surveys with teachers and students identified challenges in interpreting visual content. An additional evaluation with state board students assessed the self-sufficiency of illustrations through literal, inferential, creative, critical, and visual response categories, providing insights into how images enhance teaching and learning.
