Industrial design is a creative activity whose aim is to determine the formal qualities of objects produced by industry. IDC started in 1969 with the main labs and studios being Metal Workshop, Material Workshop, Wood Workshop, Plastic Workshop, Ceramic Workshop, Paint Studio, Bamboo Studio, Product Division Cell, Ergonomics Laboratory, Wavefront Lab, Photo Studio, and so on. The industrial designs of that time (1999–2003) were: Anand Kulkarni's Composite Pedestal Lamb, Sachin Behere's Signage Design for Expressways, Jai Raj Patil's Design for Sweeping Aid, and so on. Professors G V Sreekumar, B K Chakravarthy, Shilpa Ranade, and Raja Mohanty are among the new faculty members who joined during that time period. DDS 99 at Nehru Centre, Mumbai (1999), Castles in the Air at the National Centre for Performing arts, Bombay (1999), Bamboo Dying Workshop at Developmental Science Academy in Kashere (1999), A Pottery Workshop under CEP at IDC (2000), Raku Workshop at IDC (2000), Animation Workshop at IDC (2000), are some of the major exhibition, workshops, and events held by IDC.
