This project aims to improve communication between India's deaf and hearing communities. With around 18 million deaf individuals in India, it’s vital to help hearing people understand and accept deaf culture.
We are focusing on children aged 6 to 12 years, as they are in a key stage of development and open to learning new things. The goal is to create a fun and simple activity that teaches the basics of Indian Sign Language (ISL). This activity will be interactive and enjoyable, helping children learn while having fun.
To design this activity, I conducted research that included interviews with experts and observations of children. This helped me understand how children learn and what activities would engage them. The aim is to foster inclusivity and awareness of deaf culture among hearing children.
Learning ISL can be difficult due to its complex vocabulary and sentence structures. However, teaching young children the basics can lay a strong foundation for their future learning. By making ISL accessible and fun, we can help create a more inclusive generation that supports the deaf community.
In summary, this project will develop a fun activity to help able-bodied children learn the basics of Indian Sign Language (ISL).
