We designed a Voice-Assisted Billing Interface (VABI) that will enable the Kirana shopkeepers in India to prepare digital bills through voice. VABI enables these shopkeepers to create a bill by issuing voice commands to the system, leaving their hands free for multi-tasking in the shop. VABI is designed to save the shopkeepers' time and enhance their performance. We conducted a Wizard of Oz prototype testing with six users in their shop, over a period of two weeks. During this study, we did a performance evaluation of VABI against manual billing method and found that VABI is faster than manual billing. We analysed usage logs and found that VABI is easy to learn and viable for use in Kirana shops in real-life settings if a set-command based VUI is used. We also investigated various privacy concerns related to the public billing of items in a Kirana store. This paper discusses the issues considered in the design of VABI and the insights that inform the voice-design of this system.
