Potli bags are made by using two different patterns of satin cloth. Two cloths are kept adjacent to stitching. The edges are stitched with the help of a sewing machine. The cloth, which is supposed to be exposed outside, is kept under the other cloth while stitching. Once the stitching is completed it is kept on a table to level the cloths. Then it is ironed to remove wrinkles and to give stiffness.
All four corners are folded evenly as per the measurement and are being marked. The thread is being inserted as per the colour combination on the machine. A variety of colour combinations are used for an attractive look. A small gap is left while stitching the four corners for inserting satin ribbon. A safety pin is being pinned at the corner of the satin ribbon to insert it inside the gap easily. A long satin ribbon is inserted inside the four corners of stitched cloth. At one end the satin ribbon is cut and knotted by the artisan. One more satin ribbon is inserted and knotted in the same way. The cloth is turned inside to outside after the corners are being stitched. As the completion of this process, the satin ribbon is pulled up tightly. This gives a complete shape of a potli bag, which is ready to carry gifts.
